Carter Holt Harvey in Australasia, wood and panels for building
Carter Holt Harvey is one of Australasia's leading forest products companies, manufacturing and supplying timber, laminated veneer lumber, plywood, particleboard and other building products to the New Zealand and Australian markets.
CHH together with its legacy companies has been a feature of the Australasian timber industry for more than 100 years. Over the past decade, it has reconfigured its asset base through a combination of organic growth, mergers and acquisitions, capacity expansions at key sites and investment in technology. It has consistently introduced new processes to improve productivity, and kept the business streamlined by closing smaller, less competitive facilities. In 2011, a new management team under CEO Prafull Kesha was put in place. This team has strengthened the business and remains committed to further improving CHH’s performance. CHH is organised into three business units with 13 factories: Woodproducts NZ (WPNZ), Woodproducts Australia (WPA), and Carters.WPNZ is the largest producer of wood-based building products in New Zealand. WPNZ’s market-leading position is supported by its large scale production operations, its good access to competitively-priced raw materials, its broad range of products and the strong relationships it maintains with major distribution channels. WPNZ’s five production facilities are strategically located near to the source of key production inputs and markets. WPA is a leading producer of wood products in Australia. It operates a network of twelve mills, all of which are located close to key sources of fibre and markets, and is the market leader in several key product categories. Carters is a leading trade-focussed building supplies and hardware distributor, primarily supplying residential and commercial markets across New Zealand. Carters has 50 wholesale distribution outlets and nine frame and truss plants located around New Zealand, including in the key growth regions of Auckland, Waikato/Bay of Plenty and Christchurch. Much of its sales are delivered direct to the building site by its own distribution fleet, limiting the need for large store footprints or high traffic locations. CHH’s growth strategy is based on optimising its operational performance, maintaining low production costs, increasing the penetration of trade distribution by Carters, and maintaining high-quality delivery standards.
