Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES): What role for a green economy? Concept, Approaches and Case Studies

The workshop will bring together policy makers, practitioners and stakeholders throughout the UNECE region (western and eastern Europe, the Caucasus, central Asia, North America). It is organized by the UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section, in close cooperation with the UNECE Water Convention secretariat, the UN Environment Programme and its programme on the Economics of Ecosystem and Biodiversity (TEEB), the World Conservation Union (IUCN), the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment, the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) and ForestEurope.
Different case studies will be presented which should enable the exchange of experiences across the UNECE region and across sectors, comprising forests and related ecosystems such as water, wetlands, agricultural land and others. Participants will be invited to discuss enabling conditions for the set-up, implementation and continuity of successful PES schemes as well as the role the PES mechanism can play for facilitating the transition to a green economy.
In addition to the enclosed information note, more information on the workshop and its registration form can be found at: http://timber.unece.org/index.php?id=329

Forest and Water in drylands: a virtuous cycle Information exchange from the Mediterranean to Central Asia

The workshop will bring together countries and stakeholders from the region encompassing the whole Mediterranean to Central Asia to discuss the nexus forests - water - drylands. It is organized by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment and the UNECE Water Convention secretariat, in close cooperation with the UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section, the FAO Forest Conservation Team (FOMC) and the secretariat of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
The workshop is targeted to countries in the UNECE and the Mediterranean region - including North Africa and West Asia - having semi arid and arid forest cover. At the workshop, different case studies will be presented and discussed allowing the exchange of experiences on the challenges of forests and water in drylands, and solutions and tools that can help their integrated management maximising benefits for both sectors, including payments for ecosystem services.
The working languages for both workshops are English, French and Russian. In addition to the enclosed information note, more information on the workshop and its registration form can be found at: http://www.unece.org/env/water/meetings/forest_water_drylands_workshop.html
