IWPA Unveils Environmental, Aesthetic, and Innovative Excellence Award Winners

The International Wood Products Association (IWPA) announced IWPA Excellence Award winners on the opening day of the 54th Annual Convention. Winners were announced in three categories: Environmental Excellence, Aesthetic Design and Innovation.
Scott Beggs, IWPA 2009/2010 President, “This is the first awards program of its kind for the IWPA. Members in our association have created truly stunning creations with exotic woods, and these nominations also illustrate the best in corporate social responsibility and environmental leadership. We are proud to recognize these companies and their work as representative of the amazing work being done by IWPA members around the world.”
Aesthetic Design Excellence Winner: Veneer Technologies for their veneer’s contribution to the magical Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Veneer Technologies products inspire architects, designers, architectural woodworkers and students from around the world to create masterpieces from imported wood products.
Innovative Excellence Winner: Durable Wood Products and their Turada® Wallaba shingles “Class A” fire rated roof system. Durable Wood Products developed a new application for a lesser-known species, providing a roofing system that is environmentally friendly, sustainable, fire resistant, and an excellent untreated alternative for traditional wood shingles and shakes.
Environmental Excellence Winner: Cikel America for recognition of their commitment to corporate social responsibility. In addition to Cikel’s 1.2 million acres of privately owned and FSC managed forests in Brazil, Cikel is working with communities in the U.S. to advance sustainable building. One such program, the Studio 804 graduate design-build program at the University of Kansas, School of Architecture and Urban Planning, taught young architects the value of sustainable living and received a LEED Platinum rating by the US Green Building Council.
