The
Gulf States are undergoing radical changes: The development of
new energy sources, growing numbers of visitors and
holidaymakers and increasing investment from abroad are only a
few of the reasons for the economic advancement of the entire
region. Whether new financial centres, hotels or airports -
there is plenty of building activity in the Gulf. Noted
experts therefore meet in the Bahrain International Exhibition
Centre from 5-7 December 2005 to discuss building solutions
for hot and humid climates and present relevant ideas and
concepts. The exhibition, conference and the two accompanying
special shows of the three-day Intelligent Building Middle
East 2005 focus on the specific requirements for building
concepts and intelligent building materials.
The general conditions for
intelligent building projects in the Middle East are
determined by the extreme climatic conditions in the region
and the principles of sustainable planning and building with
the aim of achieving optimum comfort for the users. Efficient
building concepts and integrated solutions are required from
the building industry in the Gulf region. A suitable knowledge
and trading platform for this is Intelligent Building Middle
East - where companies and experts present projects, building
components, systems and technologies in the Bahrain
International Exhibition Centre in Manama from 5-7 December
2005. The exhibition and conference will be opened by the
patron of the event, HE Fahmi bin Ali Al-Jowder, Minister of
Works and Housing of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The centre of knowledge transfer is the conference with
altogether 56 papers, which serves as the forum for the latest
research findings, developments, technologies and building
concepts in hot and humid climates. The Conference Committee
chaired by Mohammed Khalil Al Sayed, Bahrain Society of
Engineers, Dr. Helmut Hohenstein, member of the Institute for
Corporate Research and Management (ifu) at the University of
Halle-Wittenberg, and Dr.-Ing. Werner Lang, part-time lecturer
at the Technical University of Munich and Chairman of the
Scientific Advisory Committee, has succeeded in obtaining
noted international scientists as speakers at the conference
in Bahrain. "We cover a very specific and highly interesting
spectrum with Intelligent Building Middle East. The response
to the call for papers was therefore all the more impressive -
especially due to the many high-quality papers we have
received," reports Werner Lang. The speakers on the three days
of the event include the following:
Prof. Michelle Addington,
Harvard Graduate School of Design, USA
Prof. Dr. Ali A. Alraouf, University of Bahrain
Prof. Dr. Leon Glicksman, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, Boston, USA
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Hausladen, Technical University of
Munich, Germany
Prof. Thomas Herzog, Technical University of Munich,
Germany
Prof. Federico Butera, Politechnico di Milano, Italy
Jens Jakob Happ, AS&P - Albert Speer & Partner GmbH
Prof. Dr. Hatem A. Ibrahim, Helwan University, Cairo
Prof. Arvind Krishan, University of New Dehli
Prof. Dr. Klaus Sedlbauer, Fraunhofer Institute for
Building Physics, Stuttgart, Germany
Dr. Aysin Sev, Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Istanbul
Prof. Dr. Frederick Steiner, University of Texas, USA
Dr. Volker Wittwer, Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy
Systems, Freiburg, Germany
The conference contents cover the segments of innovative
materials and components, intelligent window and facade
systems, efficient use of energy and other resources, current
solutions for cooling, ventilation, shading and daylight
control, highly developed design, administration and
simulation tools, and case studies of concepts and buildings.
In addition to the speakers mentioned, top experts from the
industry will take part in the conference and contribute their
specialist knowledge in the field of future-orientated
building design in the Middle East. Werner Lang particularly
emphasizes the presence of locally based consultant architects
and developers: "The presence of Nakheel and Emaar, two of the
big players in building planning and project implementation in
the Middle East, is very promising for the European technology
drivers. Our aim in planning the conference was to bring
together university research, new technologies and locally
based project organizers and decision-makers." Both companies
have attracted worldwide attention through spectacular
projects like the three man-made island worlds off the coast
of Dubai and the gigantic Burj Dubai tower building (expected
height of some 700 metres).
The international exhibition for intelligent building will be
organized by Nürnberg Global Fairs together with the Bahrain
Convention & Exhibition Bureau and the Bahrain Society of
Engineers and will take place annually starting in 2005. The
exhibition and conference are accompanied by two special shows
for "Projects" and "Innovative Technologies". One special show
provides the platform for selected case studies of buildings
in hot and humid climates and the other examines individual
building materials, products and systems, plus planning and
software tools. More information about the exhibition can be
